84th Annual Western Mass/Connecticut Valley Championship Chess Tournament
A HERITAGE EVENT!! (the longest running Trophy event in U.S.chess history!!)

DIRECTIONS: From the Mass Turnpike (Route 90) take exit 4 to Route 91 North. Then from Route 91 heading north, take exit 15, then turn left onto Lower Westfield Road and right onto Homestead Avenue. Continue through the next set of lights and shortly you will see Holyoke Community College.
From Route 91 heading south, take exit 16. Then turn right onto Cherry Street, and an immediate left onto Homestead Avenue (Route 202 South/West).
PARKING: Enter the campus from Homestead Avenue, and then turn left. Park in Lot E at the bottom of the hill.
FORMAT: 5SS, G/90 Rounds 1-2 in 1-day schedule G/40.
REGISTRATION: 2-day registration ends 10 AM on Saturday,
ROUND TIMES: 10:30 AM, 2 PM and 5:30 PM on Sat. 9:30 AM, 1:30 PM and 5 PM on Sunday.
1-day registration ends 9 AM on Sunday,
ROUND TIMES: 9:15 AM, 10:40 PM, 1/2 point bye, 1:30 PM and 5 PM on Sunday

February 23, 2009: Matthew Meredith wins 84th Western Mass./Conn.
Valley Championship
USCF-rated expert Matthew Derek Meredith of West Hartford,
Coonnecticut won the 84th Western Massachusetts/Connecticut Valley
Championship, held Feb. 21-22 at the Kittredge Center at Holyoke
Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Meredith posted a
perfect score - at least for him - of 4.5-0.5 by playing in the one-
day version of the event where a half-point bye was mandatory in the
third round. This was Meredith's second Western Mass./Conn. Valley
championship win within the past three years, as he tied for first
place in 2006 with three other contestants. Leonid Tkach, a 69-year-
old expert from Amherst, Mass. won the top Expert trophy, while
Aleksandar Brancic, 62, of West Springfield, Mass. garnered the top
Class A. prize and Michael Zyra of Westfield, Mass. was top Class B.
Andre Saint Louis, 76, of Springfield, Mass. won the top Class C
prize and Matthew Webber, a student at the University of
Massachusetts at Amherst and president of the college's chess club,
was top Class D. There were no Class E players in the event, but
first-time player Vitaliy Leonidovich Dipon of West Springfield won
the top Unrated trophy. The tournament, billed as the longest-running
trophy tournament in the United States, drew 28 players - eight more
than last year. Western Massachusetts Chess Association president

this tournament.
The listing says 5SS but the times indicate 6 games.
Please let me know which is correct as we may have to book a hotel
nearby if there is an early start Sunday with a late finish on Saturday.

Hi Tom,
There are one day and two day options available;
If you wish to play both days (all at G/90), then round one on Saturday will start at 10:30 AM, round two at 2 PM and round three at 5:30 PM.
On the second day, with the one day option, round one will begin at 9:15 AM and round two begins at 10:40 AM (both of these rounds are played at G/40). All one day competitors then receive a 1/2 point bye for the third round.
It is at THAT point that both the one day and two day sections merge: round four for BOTH sections begins at 1:30 PM on Sunday (at G/90), followed by the fifth and final round on Sunday beginning at 5 PM.
Sorry for the typo... I copied the times from last year's flyer. Let me know if you have any more questions or need hotel recommendations.

P.S. The reason for the "extended" break in between rounds three and four on Sunday is so that WMCA can only it's annual meeting (beginning at 12:30 PM). We will have officer's reports, voting and a "state of the union" address by yours truly. Not to be missed!
